Meet. Dr. Silverman

Chancellor Sean O'Keefe appointed Harold Silverman, dean of the LSU Graduate School, interim provost and executive vice chancellor of LSU, effective Oct. 1, 2006. He will serve in that capacity while a national search for a new provost is being conducted.

Dr. Silverman’s main task as interim provost is to work with faculty, student and staff leadership, and the other vice chancellors, to continue the strong forward momentum LSU has gained in achieving its national Flagship Agenda.

He was named permanent dean of the Graduate School in July. Prior to that, he served as interim vice chancellor for research and graduate studies and dean of the Graduate School.

Silverman came to LSU in 1981. Since then, he has held such positions as professor; associate dean and dean of the College of Basic
Sciences; chair of the Department of Biological Sciences; and vice provost for arts, sciences and engineering.

Silverman received a bachelor of science degree in zoology from the University of Michigan in 1972. He received a master of science degree in microbiology in 1974 and a doctorate in zoology in 1977, both from Ohio University. He conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Toronto from 1977-1980 on a Muscular Dystrophy Association of Canada Postdoctoral Fellowship.

He received the Distinguished Alumni Award from Ohio University’s Department of Biology in 1995; the Alumni of Distinction Award from Ohio University’s College of Arts and Sciences, also in 1995; and the LSU Foundation Distinguished Faculty Award in 1996.

He is involved in the community through Rotary Club, the Beth Shalom Synagogue Men’s Club and the board of the Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center, among others. During his career, he has received numerous grants – worth more than $65 million – for his research and educational activities. His research focuses largely on the comparative physiology of mussels and mollusks, and he and his colleagues hold a patent for a method of controlling zebra mussels using neuromuscular agents. He has written or co-written more than 60 peer-reviewed articles, and presented a similar number of invited talks and professional abstracts.

He and his wife, Edna, have two children, Yale and Robin.
